Chapter Introduction | Web Resources | Assignment Comments | Teaching Materials

Below is additional material associated with the topics covered in chapter 4.

CSCW and groupware

There are many good sources of information about CSCW and groupware. A good starting point is the usabilityfirst portal:
http://www.usabilityfirst.com/groupware/

Another useful portal for computer-mediated communication is http://www.december.com/cmc/mag/

A good overview of the history of CSCW written by Jonathan Grudin (pdf downloadable from his homepage), is:
Grudin J. (1988) Why CSCW applications fail: Problems in the design and evaluation of organizational interfaces. Proc. CSCW 88, 85-93.

Ethnographic studies

A number of ethnographic studies are available on the web, including our own case studies. One of the most extensive collections put together in the 90s was for a project called COTCOS (Cooperative Technologies for Complex Work Settings). There are about 20 studies covering all manner of areas that use quite different analytic approaches to discuss their findings.
